Here comes the Rain – Are you and your house ready?

RainSo we are actually getting some rain this year! Woo hoo!  This is much needed for our dry state. Unfortunately many people, or rather their homes, aren’t always prepared for the rain. Here are some tips to consider as we head through one of the rainier seasons we have seen in some time. A little preparation can save you a lot of hassle and money later on.

Landscaping: Trees can cause great damage to a home during a storm. Trim back limbs that hang over the house or to remove trees completely if they are too close to the home. Broken branches or toppled frees frequently cause power outages and property damage during and following storms.

Check Drainage: Drainage is perhaps the most overlooked property management tool that every homeowner has. Make sure you do not have pooling of water especially close to the foundation. If necessary contact a professional to install drainage systems to remove heavy pooling areas.

Gutters & Downspouts: If a gutter fails, it can cause problems with the foundation of your home. Be sure you attach extensions at the base of all downspouts to cany the water away from your home’s foundation. Make sure all rain gutters are free of debris and drain properly.

Roofing & Shingles: Inspect the shingles and roof gutters yourself or hire a professional roofing contractor to look for any damage that might cause leaks during heavy rains.

Windows & Doors: Check areas around windows for water damage and water intrusion.

Umbrellas: Do not leave patio umbrellas open and/or too close to your home. One good wind and it may become an indoor umbrella.
